Do We Teach What We Really See?
Back in 1999 when I decided to get into coaching by coaching my oldest son's 8 yr. old team, I was like many dads out there when it came to giving hitting instruction. I passed along all of the same tips, used the same verbage, and taught the kids the same things I was taught while playing. "Squish the bug", "swing down", "don't stride", etc. Several years later when my youngest son started playing, the same techniques were stressed to him as well. Both of them over the years attended baseball camps and got hitting instruction from "pros" and each time those same techniques and key phrases were being reinforced. As a coach, I was sure I was focusing on the right things since they were getting the same information from the professional instruction and camps they were attending.
Fast forward to 2008. By this time both of my sons were involved in travel ball and I became interested in watching kids who hit really well and trying to figure out their mechanics. This is when I came across Mike Epstein's video, "Do We Teach What We Really See". I was amazed at what I was seeing in the video and the things that Mike was talking about when it came to the mechanics of the swing. All of the mechanics I had been teaching the players in addition to the drills they were being taught at lessons and camps were totally different from how a major leaguer swings. Those guys don't swing down, or squish the bug! I had seen the light and became obsessed with researching this more to become better informed to help my players become better hitters.
I watched that video over and over and began to use the drills on my sons. After just a short time I could see the difference in their swings. I found the Epstein website and read every page. I was hooked. I had to have more information and I knew this is something I wanted to teach.

In the spring of 2010, I went to Denver to learn from the best, Mike and Jake Epstein and become a Certified Epstein Instructor. Hitter's Advantage was created shortly thereafter. I have worked with numerous baseball and fastpitch players and have helped each of them hit to their full potential. What does every player that comes through the program learn?
- Time-proven mechanics that increase bat speed, hand quickness, and POWER
- Torque ("hips lead hands") and its unparalleled application in the swing
- How to correctly match the plane of his swing to the plane of the pitch
- How to properly stay “inside the ball”
- Mike Epstein’s proprietary drills that help insulate the hitter from prolonged slumps
- The vital difference between “style” and “technique” and its profound effect on productive
hitting
- When to stride and when to swing
- How to self-correct—“on-the-fly"
